TLDCON2013: IDN-domains support can expand Internet audience

September 11, 6th International conference for ccTLD registries and registrars of CIS, Central and Eastern Europe opened in Greece. (TLDCON 2013) This year the conference was attended by more than 130 representatives of national registries and registrars from 24 countries in the world. The conference has been organized by the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ and Technical Center of Internet with ICANN support. Informational sponsors of the conference is the sectorial informational-analytical agency IT-Expert and news portal “Infonik”.

ICANN Greece representative Panagiotis Papaspiliopulos (Ministry of Communications of Greece) noted that  CIS, Central and Eastern Europe registries and registrars cooperation is very important for Internet development in the region. George Papapavlou, EETT Member of the board and the evangelist of European Internet, spoke about how Greece registry works and shared experience in the field of settling domain disputes. Papapavlou thinks that it is necessary to keep good working relationship between the private sector and government, and Greece, according to him in this case can be considered an example for other registries.

Vegelis Segredakis, a representative of the national registry, .GR, spoke about IDN implementation in the Greece domain and also answered questions on Greece national registry work. All the conference participants are unique in the opinion that internationalized domains and email addresses support  can expand not just IDn-domains registry but Internet in the whole.  Coordination Center CEO Andrey Kolesnikov shares the participants’ point of view, who said that CC is working on internationalised domains email support and how the largest Internet-companies are participating in this problem solving.

CC CEO also outlined that .РФ domain where there are more than 813 thousand domain names, has found its place on the domain market and is actively used in the outdoor advertising. The main problem which slows the .РФ domain development is lack of a full email, although this has positively influenced the domain safety yet. “The domain is fully safe: there are almost no viruses, phishing and other cyberthreats”, - says Andrey Kolesnikov. He also reported that CC continues working on Internet becoming more and more safe for Russian users: new anti-phishing internet resource will start working in the nearest future.
